“God and Nature first made us what we are, and then out of our own created genius we make ourselves what we want to be. Follow always that great law. Let the sky and God be our limit and Eternity our measurement.” - Marcus Garvey

The Marcus Mosiah Garvey Institute and Teaching Academy takes great pride in our school and our students.  Please refer to the information provided below to assist you and your child in transitioning to the MMGITA experience.

Students should be focused on learning and not what on they are wearing.  Uniforms help to create a learning environment.  Uniforms must be worn daily, with the exception of Fridays.  The following uniform dress code is strictly enforced:

Young Sisters

Black pleated skirt/jumper/dress slacks

White polo shirt (long or short sleeves)

White dress uniform blouse (long or short sleeves)

Black cardigan sweater (button-down front)

Black or white knee socks/black or white tights or stockings

Black shoes

Young Brothers

Black slacks

White polo shirt (long or short sleeves)

White dress uniform shirt (long or short sleeves)

Black cardigan sweater (button-down front)

Black dress socks

Black shoes

Personal Hygiene

A comfortable environment includes a healthy one.  It is the responsibility of each student and/or parent to ensure that the student has taken care of his/her personal hygiene needs prior to coming to school.  Uniforms, as well as the student’s person, should be neat and clean upon arriving at school.  Students who have difficult meeting this requirement will be subject to the Institute’s disciplinary policy.

Though we have been able to effectively use our limited resources, at this time, MMGITA is unable to provide hot lunches for our students.  In addition, with our continued growth it has become increasingly difficult for us to meet the demands for heating individual lunches.  Heated food should be in thermal containers and heated at home.  Students are not allowed to bring foods that must be heated or prepared.  As an alternative, please consider the suggested list of nutritional lunch options listed below:

Sandwiches

Salads

Fresh fruits

Fresh veggies (carrots, celery, etc)

100% juice

Water

Raisins/dried fruit

Rice cakes

Animal crackers

Granola bars

Whole grain chips/baked chips

Popcorn

(Note:  Wild Oats, Square Foods, Krogers (Sanderlin, Barlett, and Winchester locations) are great places to find many of the suggested foods.)

Every Friday is “HOT SOUP FRIDAY.”  A parent volunteers to provide hot lunches for the respective classes; students are not required to bring their lunch.
